GANDU - THE LOSER

…a riposte to the “sexual hypocrisy of Indian society, which refuses to acknowledge the centrality of sexuality in all philosophies" - Q

94 MINUTES | BENGALI WITH ENGLISH SUBS | B&W / COLOR |  FILM | FICTION | 2011

SYNOPSIS

Surreal and bizarre come together as a rebellious rapper, Gandu, embarks on a drug-fueled rampage with a rickshaw puller friend on the streets of Kolkata, rapping away the rage and decrepitude of his existence. Breaking new stylistic ground and with an unusual lens for gender and sexuality, Q’s Gandu was banned in India and premiered at Berlinale. It’s been to more than 60 film festivals worldwide, winning top honors at SAIFF and Seattle, with screenings at Slamdance, Singapore, Durban and Amsterdam. Despite its ban, Gandu saw millions of illegal downloads, becoming an indie cult phenomenon overnight.

What critics Are Saying

- POP MATTERS

“Gritty, provocative and rife with sexual innuendos, Gandu’s rhymes expose the moral hypocrisy of the world he inhabits.”
